Quick Tips for Resume Writing

Everyone wants to believe that when they write their resume and send their resume to a prospective employer, someone on the receiving end painstakingly reviews the whole document.  After all, you spent hours and hours writing your resume and putting that thing together.  The reality to far different.  Chances are your resume will only be given a cursory glance, so you need to make it count.  How do resume writers produce a resume that stands out?  Let’s take a look at how to be a resume writer who has the keys to succeed.

Brief is Best

Try to keep your resume as brief as possible.  Reading your resume should be like watching the highlights of a football match.  You get a summary of the whole game in less than a minute.  If it doesn’t fit on one or (at most) two pages, then forget it.  Resume writers should focus on the most interesting and relevant bits.  Also, give more space to your current or recent jobs, and less to the past.  Include the things that are most relevant to the job application you are applying for.  With this in mind…

Ditch the Unnecessary Information

A resume writer does not need to include your age, marital status, religion or nationality. This might have been the standard in the past, but it is now illegal for your employer to ask you this information so there's no need to include it.  As a resume writer you should focus on the skills and qualifications that make you a good fit for this position.  It might be really interesting that you have a Certificate 4 in Hairdressing, but is that going to help you land that accountancy position you want?

Employers want a resume they can scan

Lay-out and formatting of resume writing is also super important.  Given that most employers will merely peruse your work, looking for key words, job titles and major facts that show you are a good fit for the position, it needs to be laid out well. Resume writing should use simple text in one modern, standard font that is easy to read, and that everyone can understand.

Professional stands out

If you are still using your original Hotmail account from the 1990s, it might be time to consider getting a new email address for the purpose of your job applications.  Sure,  fairytwinkletoes@hotmail.com was a hilarious email address back in the day, but now it makes you look like you’re stuck in a time warp.  In fact, anything that makes your resume look dated and unprofessional erodes your chances of landing the job.  This include poor spelling, grammar and punctuation, so check your work twice and then get a friend to check it, and then check it again!
