Job Application Writing – Why Planning is Very Important in Job Application Writing

Successful job application writing initially starts with great planning. That means initially identifying what career path you want to follow and deciding on this based on your qualifications, interests, skills and experience. It is no good applying for a job that you have great interest in a certain field but don’t have the required skills or qualifications outlined in the job description. Similarly you shouldn’t apply for a job just because you have the skills, experience or qualifications if you have little or no interest in the job, the industry, the organisation or the working conditions or salary. That would be just prone to disaster with you losing interest quickly in a job you didn’t want.

Once you have identified the type of role that fits your experience and interest etc then you need to identify what area you want to work in, do you need to access public transport, do you have a vehicle, what is the possible cost of parking, how long do you want to be travelling etc etc. Essentially you need to find a job with an organisation that meets your travel/transport needs. You need to consider are you seeking career opportunities with the prospect of advancement in the organisation. If so you need to apply for a job that offers opportunities for future promotion. You need to consider what salary/wage/work conditions you require to fit with your own personal circumstances. You need to identify if travel is required interstate/intrastate or you are required to be away from home and how that fits with your circumstances and requirements.

You also need to ascertain what type of organisation you want to work for. Does the ethos and reputation of the organisation fit with your views and requirements? For instance you might have a strong social or environmental conscience; as such you would ideally be wanting to work for an organisation which similarly has a strong focus on environmental or social responsibility. This is an aspect of the job search that is often overlooked. Job hunters either don’t think of it or have no idea how to find out these things. Well now with the advent of technology and the internet it is very easy to identify if an organisation has a social, cultural, environmental, equity etc etc focus.

Many organisations now also report on the triple bottom line. These reports are generally available on a business/organisation’s website plus there could me media articles featuring the company and organisation and what they are doing in the community, with the environment or what they are giving back to society. Maybe they have a donation program or have grants available for community organisations or have an employment program focused on real opportunities for marginalised or disadvantaged Australians or are very aware of reducing their carbon footprint. 

These are just a few of the issues that a job application writer will consider prior to even commencing the job application writing process. Planning is vitally important. If you plan and consider these issues carefully at least this will give you a strong basis to press forward in starting the search for potential job opportunities.
